About Us

  • USHLI is the only Chicago-based organization, the only one in the Midwest, and one of only six national organizations to be honored by both the President of the United States and the Government of Mexico.

  • USHLI is the only Chicago-based organization to have a President of the United States, a Vice-President of the United States, a future President of the United States, and presidential candidates address its annual conference.

  • USHLI is the only Chicago-based organization to be named National Hispanic Organization of the Year.

  • USHLI sponsors the largest annual conference of students, young professionals, and emerging leaders in the nation, held exclusively in Chicago.

Mission

The mission of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) is to fulfill the promises and principles of democracy and empower the Hispanic community and similarly marginalized groups by promoting education, leadership development, research, and civic engagement.

 

Track Record

  • Trained over 1.1 million present and future leaders
  • Awarded over $1.625 million in scholarships and internships
  • Registered 2.3 million voters
  • Published 425 reports on Latino Demographics, including the Almanac of Latino Politics
  • Organized 42 national conferences attended annually by 5,000 past, present, and future leaders representing up to 40 states.

Organizational History

  • Incorporated Midwest Voter Registration Education Project – April 1982
  • Chartered in Illinois – Midwest Voter Registration Education Project – May 1982
  • 501 (c)(3) tax-exemption status granted – September 1982
  • Received 4945(f) letter of determination (advance ruling) – September 1982
  • Became Midwest-Northeast Voter Registration Education Project – December 1987
  • Became United States Hispanic Leadership Institute – December 1996
