About the Program – Students for an Educated Democracy
Project SED is a social studies classroom-based online nonpartisan civic education program designed for high school students in grades 9–12 to elevate their level of participation in the electoral process by first elevating their understanding of local, state and federal governments and how the actions of these governmental entities effect their personal well-being, their family’s quality of life, their community, their post-secondary education or training possibilities, and their future employment opportunities. In short, understanding how American democracy works and why it matters.
Through classroom instruction, video recordings, mock elections and registering to vote, students will develop a deeper understanding of:
- The institutional framework and functions of federal, state, county, and municipal governments
- The roles, duties, responsibilities and accountability of elected officials and public institutions
- Election processes, including primary, general, run-off and special elections, as well as voting procedures
- The role of Election Judges and how elections are conducted
Election Cycle Timeline
2026 – Fall Semester
Students will receive an overview of state executive, congressional, legislative, and Board of Education elections, including the structure of government and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials. Students will participate in a mock election, conducted by the students. Eligible students will be able to register to vote in the official election as well as before graduation.
2027 – Spring Semester
Students will receive an overview of mayoral and aldermanic elections, the structure of municipal government, and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials. Students will participate in a mock election, conducted by the students. Eligible students will be able to register to vote in the municipal election as well as before graduation.
2028 – Spring Semester
Students will receive an overview of presidential primaries, delegates, congressional, and legislative elections, and conventions, including the structure of government and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials. Students will participate in a mock election, conducted by the students. Eligible students will be able to register and vote in the official election as well as before graduation.
2028 – Fall Semester
Students will receive an overview of the presidential, congressional, and legislative general elections, including the structure of government and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials. Students will participate in a mock election, conducted by the students. Eligible students will be able to register and vote in the official election as well as before graduation.
Impact
Project SED aims to elevate the level of understanding of government, public issues and the electoral process and register 250,000 students when they become eligible or before they graduate.
Project SED seeks to inspire the next generation of informed voters and civic leaders by encouraging civic responsibility and promoting lifelong participation in American democracy.
