USHLI Announces
Dolores C. Huerta Woman of Courage Medallion
Teresa Romero is the first Latina immigrant to become president of a national union in the United States. In December 2018, she was elected the 3rd president of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW). The first two presidents were Cesar E. Chavez and Arturo S. Rodriguez.
Prior to her ascension to the presidency, Teresa was secretary-treasurer of the UFW. She was Chair of the union’s Audit and Finance Committee and led the fundraising effort to secure the funds needed to construct the current headquarters of the union in Salinas, CA, serving the largest concentration of unionized farmworkers in the nation.
Before joining the UFW, she managed a construction company and a law firm that helped workers with immigration and workers compensation claims. Teresa Romero is an immigrant from Mexico who is proud of her U.S. citizenship and Mexican and Zapotecan heritage. She has played an important part in many recent successful union efforts, and she is admired by her peers for her work ethic, calm competence, organizational skills, ability to build relationships, and “Si Se Puede!” Spirit.
Teresa Romero will be presented the Dolores C. Huerta Woman of Courage Medallion at our Latina Empowerment Breakfast at 7:30 am, on Friday, February 16. If you or your group haven’t registered yet, please do so ASAP.
